In Minecraft Dungeons 2 your hero level comes from XP, while item power comes from the gear you wear, and the two move separately. The fastest way up early is to finish the Honeycomb Fields quest chain, fill every gear slot, and spend emeralds at the merchant on a refresh loop. Numbers below are from launch-week play, so the last section lists what is still unconfirmed.

Stat Comes from How to raise it
Hero level XP Quests, bosses, boss rematches
Item power Gear and artifacts Better gear in every slot, merchant, Blacksmith
Melee, ranged, armor, artifacts The four sub-scores of item power Fill each group, no empty slots
Enchantment points Hero level Rise with each level

What is the difference between power level and item power?

Your inventory shows a Level (hero level) and an Item Power, plus four small numbers: melee, ranged, armor and artifacts. Item power is built from those four. Players report one enchantment point per level gained, so points track hero level.

An empty slot drags its whole group down. In one run, a level 5 hero had item power 3 and armor 2 because the chest slot was empty. Swapping level 2 leggings for level 6 Beekeeper leggings raised armor from 2 to 3 and item power from 3 to 4. Fill every slot, even with weak gear.

When do artifact slots unlock?

The first artifact slot is open early, the second unlocks at hero level 5, and the third at level 10. Artifacts count toward item power, so an empty artifact slot hurts the same way an empty armor slot does.

Artifacts cost souls and often have cooldowns. The Totem of Shielding costs 30 souls with a 15 second cooldown, and the Creeper Candle costs 25 souls with a 5 second cooldown. See early game artifacts for picks.

What is the fastest early route to level up fast?

Follow this order in Honeycomb Fields:

  1. Finish Escape from Squid Coast. Brave Haven opens as your hub, and Haven Station gives you fast travel.
  2. Do The Illagers from the Rift. It takes you through your first rift into Singer’s Meadow. Clear the ambush and return.
  3. Take Keeper of the Bees. Collect planks, pick a build spot away from sculk, clear monsters and build the hive. You get the Hivemind Hardhat, which makes your positive statuses last 70% longer.
  4. Take The Creeper Candle Conspiracy. Follow the glowing trail into the cave, clear the ambush waves, and read the banner on the soul-corrupted pillager before you charge in. You get the Creeper Candle plus armor pieces.
  5. Finish The Lost Merchant to unlock the merchant and open the bridge to Howling Woods.

Smash every pot you pass for emeralds, and use the map’s “view area items” button to see what you missed. The campaign walkthrough covers what comes next.

How does the merchant raise item power?

The merchant has three rows: common, rare and special. Emeralds buy items and echo shards level the merchant. Level 1 shows only common gear. Reaching level 2 costs 10 echo shards and opens rare, and level 3 costs 15 and opens special.

Players rate ten shards on a merchant level above three shards on an early refresh. Stock refreshes on a timer, and players report a few free refreshes before an early refresh costs 3 shards.

The loop works like this:

  1. Spend emeralds on the best upgrade for an empty or weak slot.
  2. Refresh, compare the new stock with the compare button, and buy again.
  3. Salvage the old gear for emeralds with the multi-salvage button.

One run went from item power 5 to 6 without fighting and ended with only 75 emeralds left. Emeralds in your pocket do not raise item power, so spend them. Later the merchant is poor value for long-term gear, but it is great for filling gaps early.

Does the Blacksmith keep gear at your power level?

Yes. Upgrading at the Blacksmith keeps a piece level with your power level. Cost rises as the gap grows, so players suggest keeping gear within about 10 levels of you. Re-rolling abilities also costs more each time: roughly 1 shard for the first few, then 2, then 3. Common gear has no abilities, rare has one and special has two, so re-rolls only matter on rare and above. The enchanting guide covers shard costs in full.

What are the currency caps?

Currency Used for Cap
Emeralds Buying gear 9,999
Echo shards Merchant levels, re-rolls, enchanting 100
Enchantment points Applying enchantments Based on level

Anything past a cap is lost, so spend before you hit it.

How do you get XP quickly later on?

Re-fight bosses for the best hero XP, and use dungeons, rifts and Soul Storms for shards and gear. The farming guide has the full routes, and the boss guide has attack patterns.

Quick FAQ

What is item power? A rating from your gear across melee, ranged, armor and artifacts.

Why did my item power not change after leveling? Hero level and item power are separate. Gear drives item power.

How many artifact slots do I get? Three: one early, one at level 5 and one at level 10.

Is the merchant worth it? Early, yes. Later, players call it poor value.
